CANOPY
TOURS AND ZIPLINING IN SOUTH AFRICA
Ziplining or canopy tours offer a fun and alternative view
of the forest.
Tree top ziplines were originally designed
for biologists in Costa Rica to study the fauna and flora
of the high forest canopies. Quickly they realised that this
was an exciting and educational adventure that could be offered
to the public.
In South Africa, tours consist of about ten
platforms connected by ziplines high above virgin forests
and gorges. The adventure begins with a safety briefing and
a demonstration by your guides. Thereafter, you will be kitted
up with a harness and safety helmet. You will then be transported
into the forest or up to the mountain to the start of the
canopy tour. Tandem slides with your guide are also possible.
Several places offer Canopy tours in South
Africa
The Tsitsikamma Forest at Storms River consists
of 10 platforms and 10 slides, the longest of which is 100m.
Karkloof, in the KawZulu Natal Midlands
consists of eight slides, the longest of which is 170m. The
focus is on the plants and birds of the forest with a waterfall
and stream as an added bonus.
The Magaliesburg, about 90 minutes from Johannesburg
/ Pretoria is set against spectacular cliffs above the trees.
The longest aerial canopy tour is found
